How it feels when someone has your back

In light of having just read The Oatmeal's take on the misuse of the word literally and being of a similar, grammar-appreciative ilk, I'll preface by saying that I'm not writing about the practice of owning another human's spinal column. I have no idea what that would feel like. From the look of that Oatmeal comic, my guess is that it would be both horrifying and a power trip. But mostly horrifying.

But I digress...

What I'm referring to, for the whole 0.2% of you who don't know, is the understanding that another person is so supportive of you, so trusting of you, so full of belief in you as a person of value that they will unequivocally stand by you in everything you do. That is when someone has your back. And this is how that feels:

  • You can make mistakes, because someone else will always be there to help you pick up the pieces.
  • You can make a fool of yourself, because the person who has your back will only ever laugh with you, not at you.
  • You can stand up for what you believe in when others disagree, because that person will give you confidence.
  • You can be exactly the person you are, even if you don't fit in, because that person will love you no matter what.

Most importantly: you can afford to take risks. Because when any of the things on the list above happen, the person who has your back will be there. You'll never be left alone to pick up the pieces or drag yourself out of the mud.

This is why we all really need that person. Because without taking risks, how will we ever move forward?
