Fair doesn’t always look the same

Amanda Palmer’s excellent TED talk has been making the rounds on the web lately, and for good reason. From her post-college day-job as a street statue to her [massively successful Kickstarter campaign][1], Amanda has made a point of being unafraid to ask for the things she wants and needs. In the talk below, she regales stories of asking for money as a street performer, asking for accommodation for her and her band and even asking someone to provide the crate she used on the TED stage. Amanda’s talk is called The Art of Asking, and it *is* about this—how difficult but also rewarding it is to ask for what we need. There’s more to it, though. Amanda also explores the controversy and media attacks her methods have attracted. There’s a distinct school of thought about her willingness to receive (or ‘take’) help from her audience as being more an act of taking advantage. With a little exploration of the connections she made with her audience as a street statue, Amanda points out how fairness looks different depending on the situation, and how important the process of giving and receiving can be for two people. Give the video a watch and see what else you get out of it—trust me, there’s bucket loads more in there. Want to chat about it?
